Letterenfonds laat met werkbezoek aan de ABCSSS-eilanden de verbrede subsidiemogelijkheden zien

Het Letterenfonds vindt het belangrijk om de originele verhalen, gedichten, literaire performances van en op de eilanden wijdverbreid gelezen en gehoord te laten worden. In het bijzonder wil het fonds het aanbod van literatuur in het Papiamentu en Papiamento vergroten. Om deze reden zijn veel subsidiemogelijkheden van het fonds sinds 2024 toegankelijker gemaakt voor de ABCSSS-eilanden. Sindsdien heeft het Letterenfonds circa 1,5 miljoen euro gesubsidieerd aan 69 projecten in het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk.

Tijdens de netwerksessies die het Letterenfonds organiseerde op de eilanden toonden we voorbeelden van al ondersteunde projecten. Ook waren er verschillende makers aanwezig die exemplaren overhandigden van gesubsidieerde boeken via het fonds.

Zo was schrijver Delno L.A. Tromp aanwezig tijdens de netwerksessie op Bonaire. Hij ontving subsidie voor het boek Het eiland van Lionel (Papiaments: Isla di Lionel) dat hij in twee talen publiceerde. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal over het 16-jarige eilandskind Lionel, dat benieuwd is naar de wereld aan de andere kant van de oceaan en gaat studeren. Na Lionel’s terugkeer op zijn eiland wordt de lezer al gauw meegenomen in een spannende ontdekkingstocht.

Een ander voorbeeld van een ondersteund project is Ban Lesa den Bario (laten we lezen in de buurt), een leesbevorderingsproject voor jongeren op Curaçao van Inspira Canva. Het project brengt wekelijks interactieve leesactiviteiten naar drie grote buurten van het eiland. In buurtcentra worden workshops, voorleesmiddagen, poëzie-optredens en digitale leesgames georganiseerd.

En ook ‘The Pride of SXM Anthology’ van Axum Art Café op Sint Maarten ontving subsidie van het fonds. Deze bloemlezing brengt gevestigde en opkomende literaire stemmen op het eiland samen, die verhalen over thema's als identiteit, veerkracht, cultuur en zelfexpressie. Hiermee brengt ‘The Pride of SXM Anthology’ een ode aan de levendige creatieve gemeenschap op Sint Maarten.

Literaire makers, vertalers en literaire organisaties kunnen bij verschillende regelingen van het Nederlands Letterenfonds terecht. Een paar voorbeelden van regelingen waar nu kan worden aangevraagd:  

• Culturele organisaties kunnen voor leesbevorderende activiteiten aanvragen bij de regeling leesbevordering. Deadline: 26 juni (17.59 uur Caribische tijd)

• Culturele organisaties kunnen aanvragen voor literaire programma’s via de gelijknamige regeling. Deadline: 26 juni (17.59 uur Caribische tijd)

• Literaire makers kunnen terecht voor nieuwe literatuur buiten het boek zoals podcasts, spoken word performances bij de regeling makers buiten het boek. Deadline: doorlopend

• Literair vertalers in het Nederlands, Papiaments of Engels zoals gesproken op de Cariben kunnen terecht bij de regeling projectsubsidies voor literair vertalers en ontwikkelbeurzen literair vertalers. Deadlines: doorlopend.  

Daarnaast openen deze regelingen binnenkort:

• Schrijvers in het Papiaments, Engels zoals gesproken op de Cariben en Nederlands kunnen vanaf 2 juli een aanvraag indienen van een nieuw literair werk in boekvorm, via projectsubsidies voor makers van boeken.

• Literaire makers en culturele organisaties uit het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk kunnen ook een aanvraag indienen via Literatuur Caribe  vanaf 7 september 2026

In May, Dutch Foundation for Literature visited the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The aim of this trip was to draw attention to the expanded funding opportunities for local creators and organizations on the ABCSSS-islands. Our staff members informed potential applicants during networking sessions and several meetings. During these sessions, several examples were given of projects that already received funding over the past two years.

The Dutch Foundation for Literature considers it important that the original stories, poems and literary performances from and on the islands are widely read and heard. In particular, the foundation aims to expand the range of literature in Papiamentu and Papiamento. For this reason, many of the fund’s grant schemes have been made more accessible to the ABCSSS islands since 2024. Since then, the Dutch Foundation for Literature has awarded approximately 1.5 million euros to 69 projects in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

During the networking sessions on the islands, examples of projects that had already received support. Various creators were also present to hand out copies of novels, which were supported by the fund.

One of the writers present was Delno L.A. Tromp, from Bonaire. He received a grant for the book Lionel’s Island (Papiamentu: Isla di Lionel), which he published in both Dutch and Papiamentu. In this novel, we follow the 16-year-old island boy Lionel, who is curious about the world on the other side of the ocean and goes off to study. After Lionel’s return to his island, the reader is soon taken on an exciting journey of discovery.

Another example of a supported project is Ban Lesa den Bario (Let’s Read in the Neighbourhood), a reading promotion project for young people in Curaçao run by Inspira Canva. This project brings weekly interactive reading activities to three major neighbourhoods on the island. These activities consist of workshops, reading afternoons, poetry performances and digital reading games.

A project supported on St. Maarten is The Pride of SXM Anthology, a dynamic literary initiative developed by Axum Art Cafe that captures the voices, stories, and creative spirit of St. Maarten. Emerging from the island’s “Pride of SXM” poetry showcases and competitions, the anthology brings together a diverse range of writers and performers whose work reflects themes of identity, resilience, culture, and self-expression.

Literary creators, translators and literary organisations can apply for several grant schemes. Here are a few examples of schemes for which applications are currently open: 

•    Cultural organisations can apply for funding for reading promotion activities under the reading promotion scheme. Deadline: 26 June (17.59 Caribbean Time)

•    Cultural organisations can apply for literary programmes via the literary programmes scheme. Deadline: 26 June (17:59 Caribbean time)

•    Literary creators can apply for new forms of literature beyond the book, such as podcasts and spoken word performances, under the ‘Creators Beyond the Book’ scheme. Deadline: ongoing

•    Literary translators working in Dutch, Papiamento or English as spoken in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can apply for the ‘Project Grants for Literary Translators’ and ‘Development Grants for Literary Translators’ schemes. Deadlines: ongoing. 

In addition, the following schemes will open soon:

•     Writers in Papiamentu, Papiamento and English as spoken in the Caribbean and Dutch can submit an application for a new literary work in book form from 2 July, via project grants for book creators.

•    Literary creators and cultural organisations from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom can also submit an application for Caribe Literature. This scheme opens at 7 September 2026
