Publishers can apply for a grant to fund translation for all genres and for production costs for high-quality illustrated children&#039;s and youth literature, graphic novels, and poetry.

For what?

The amount awarded depends on a number of factors. The requested sum must be consistent with the translator’s fee as established in the translation contract. In most cases the grant covers 80% of the requested amount, with the understanding that the remaining 20% will be paid to the translator by the publisher. In the case of books we regard as Dutch classics, the grant covers up to 100% of the translator’s fee. The grant amount is capped at €10,000. How much?

<ul><li>The Dutch Foundation for Literature places particular emphasis on the quality of translations. That&#039;s why we give you access to <a href="https://www.letterenfonds.nl/en/directory-of-translators">a database of accredited literary translators</a>. If the Foundation is not acquainted with the selected translator, a sample translation may be requested to assess the quality of the work. Only translations of a high standard can be funded.</li><li>The original Dutch-language work by the Dutch author or illustrator must have been published by a recognised Dutch or Flemish publishing house.</li><li>The translation must be published by a foreign publishing house that can ensure good distribution and promotion of the book in its own country.</li><li>There must be a contractual agreement between the Dutch rights holder and the foreign publisher, granting translation rights to the latter, unless the * work is in the public domain.</li><li>There must be a contractual agreement between the foreign publisher and the translator of the work.</li><li>The work must be published within two years from the date of the letter of confirmation.</li><li>An acknowledgment must be printed in the translated publication, stating that the publication has been made possible with financial support from the Dutch Foundation for Literature. Conditions

Have you found a Dutch book that fits your publishing list? Fantastic! To celebrate this special occasion, we have increased our grants for publishers of translations from Dutch into Swedish: we cover 90% of translation costs until the end of 2028. On top of that, we also reimburse 25% of production costs across all genres, with a maximum of 4,000 euros.

Six subsidy meetings are planned in 2026. The deadlines for sending the application are February 5, March 19, April 30, June 18, September 3, November 5.

Translation Grants for Foreign Publishers

As a foreign publisher you can apply for financial support for the publication in translation of a work of high literary quality originally written in the Dutch or Frisian language, such as fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, poetry, children's literature and classic works. Translation grants may also be made available to literary magazines and for digital-only publications.

Who can apply?

Publication of high-quality, full-colour children’s books, originally published by a Dutch or Frisian publishing house and illustrated by Dutch artists.

The maximum sum that can be awarded is €2,800 for the production costs. If the translator has been approved by the foundation, an additional translation grant of a maximum of 70% of the cost of translation can be granted.

Amount

<ul><li>The book’s literary quality and illustrations must be of a high standard.</li><li>The pictorial style, content, and use of language must all be aimed at the same age group.</li><li>There must be a coherent balance between the text, the illustrations, and the design of the book as a whole.</li><li>The translated edition must be distributed nationwide through recognised general book-trade channels.</li><li>The illustrations are made by a Dutch illustrator. A publisher cannot receive a grant for more than four books by the same author or the same illustrator.</li><li>In addition, the third book by the same author or illustrator will receive reduced funding.</li></ul>

Illustrated Children’s Books

The Dutch Foundation for Literature aims to support the publication of exceptional children’s books originally published by a Dutch or Frisian publishing house and featuring illustrations by Dutch artists. Foreign publishers can apply for financial assistance to offset a portion of the production costs, for high-quality, full-colour, illustrated children’s books.

Literary publishers, festivals, literary organisations and universities outside the Netherlands can apply for the Travel Grant.

The grant must be used exclusively to cover the travel costs for the activities described in the application. If the destination changes, or if the trip is cancelled, the Foundation must be informed immediately, and the subsidy will be withdrawn. The applicant will then be obliged to return any sum already paid.

The grant for a promotional trip will not cover more than the total travel costs an author or translator can reasonably expect to incur, up to a maximum of €3,000. Travel costs are calculated based on economy-class airline tickets, second-class train tickets, and a motor vehicle allowance of €0.21 per kilometre.

<ul><li>The application must be made by a foreign organisation or publishing house.</li><li>At least one translation must have recently been published in book form by a publishing house in the country or language area in question. The publication must be in print.</li><li>The activities in question must be public in nature, taking place onstage or at a festival.</li><li>The foreign organisation or publishing house must cover all other costs, such as accommodation, meals, and any remuneration.</li></ul>
