Development grants for literary translators

Emerging and established literary translators working into and from Dutch, Frisian, Papiamento, Papiamentu or English* may apply for a development grant to invest in their specialist knowledge and further develop their professional practice and entrepreneurial skills. Through this scheme, the Dutch Foundation for Literature aims to invest in translation quality and in the long-term careers of literary translators.

* Translations into English are only eligible where the English concerned is the variety used by native speakers in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

The development grant is intended as a contribution towards costs incurred in your professional development as a literary translator. You are free to decide how to use the grant.

What is it for?

A development grant may be used for training, coaching or mentoring. It may also cover travel and accommodation costs for a study trip (for example, a translators’ residency) or research undertaken for a translation project, whether within the Netherlands or internationally.

Translators may also use the grant to cover the preparation of a publisher submission dossier consisting of a sample translation, a reader’s report and, where applicable, translated reviews.

Who is eligible?

If you are a literary translator working into Dutch, Frisian, Papiamento, Papiamentu or English*, you must meet at least one of the following entry requirements:

  • You have previously received a project grant from the Dutch Foundation for Literature under the Project grants for literary translations scheme, and the decision on your most recent application under that scheme was positive and issued no more than ten years ago.

  • You completed one of the following translation programmes after 2010 and have demonstrably taken steps to build your career as a literary translator:
    a. MA in Literary Translation – Utrecht University or KU Leuven
    b. Vertalersvakschool Amsterdam
    c. MA in Translation (specialisation in literary translation) – Leiden University
    d. MA in Translation (Linguistics) – University of Amsterdam
    e. MA in Translation in Europe – University of Groningen
    f. Mentoring or development programme at the Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen (Centre of Expertise for Literary Translation) or CELA (Connecting Emerging Literary Artists)
    g. Short course in literary translation offered by the Expertisecentrum Literair Vertalen or Vertalersvakschool (for a language for which no full multi-year training programme exists)

  • You have published one or more translations in a literary journal funded by the Dutch Foundation for Literature, or you have completed a mentoring programme at a literary festival receiving multi-year funding from the Foundation.   • You reside in the Caribbean region and have a professional track record demonstrating that you are professionally active as a translator.

If you are a literary translator working from Dutch, Frisian, Papiamento or Papiamentu, you must meet at least one of the following entry requirements:

  • You have published two book-length translations supported by the Foundation.

  • In the case of translations from Papiamento or Papiamentu: you have a professional track record demonstrating that you are professionally active as a translator.

Grant amount

For translators working into Dutch, Frisian, Papiamento and English*, the grant ranges from €500 to a maximum of €3,500.

For translators working from Dutch, Frisian and Papiamento, the grant is fixed at €1,000.

Applications

Applications may be submitted on a rolling basis. They are assessed between 1 February and 1 December. You must submit your application before starting the proposed project.
