Applications are assessed on the literary quality of the source text, the quality of the translation and the quality of the promotional plan. Consideration is also given to the extent to which the publication addresses a gap in the existing literary offering. Please consult the scheme for the full list of criteria. Incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration. The same applies to applications for publications that have already been published or that are scheduled for publication within three months of submission.

An application must include the original work in book form or, if this is not possible, as a bound print-out; a supporting statement including a well-developed promotional plan; the completed costing form; and a sample translation of at least ten pages in Dutch or English.

You must ensure that the name and logo of the Dutch Foundation for Literature are included in all public communications related to the funded literary project. The logo can be downloaded from the website under ‘Downloads’.

An established literary publisher is understood to be a publisher that meets certain professional standards, including the use of a Model Contract, the composition of the editorial team and the coherence of the publishing list.

The name of this scheme (and the platform) is derived from the French writer, essayist and translator Marcel Schwob (1867-1905), who enjoyed considerable renown in his time. He was in close contact with a wide range of authors, including Paul Valéry, Oscar Wilde and Alfred Jarry, and was regarded as an erudite connoisseur of world literature, with a preference for the marginal and the unconventional. As a translator, he introduced, among others, the work of Robert Louis Stevenson to France.
