Literature beyond the book

As a practitioner, you may apply for funding for new literary work beyond the book – from performance to podcast, and from spoken word to virtual reality. You may also use part of the grant for professional development. Through this scheme, the Dutch Foundation for Literature aims to stimulate the quality and diversity of new literature in Dutch, Frisian, Papiamento and Dutch Sign Language.

Who is it for?

You may apply if you are professionally active within the literary field and collaborate with a presentation partner who presents the new work and brings it to the attention of an audience. The presentation partner must pay you a fee and support you in realising the project.

What can the grant be used for?

You may apply for funding to create new literary work beyond the book format. This may include, for example, spoken word or storytelling, where you perform the work yourself before a live audience, but it may also take the form of a digital literary work, such as a podcast. The new work must be publicly presented to a broad audience with the support of your presentation partner. The work must not be a book or an adaptation of an existing book.

The grant is intended to cover your own fee and project-related costs, such as production costs and the fees of collaborators. At least 50% of the grant amount must be allocated to your own fee. You may also use (part of) the grant for professional development, such as mentoring, coaching or training. Travel and accommodation costs related to the project are also eligible.

In your application, you must describe the intended final outcome and submit a detailed budget specifying the costs.

Grant Amount

You may apply for either €7,500 or €15,000. In your application, you must describe the intended final outcome and submit a budget specifying both costs and income, including the fee you will receive from the presentation partner. If you are applying (in part) for professional development, these costs must be listed separately in the budget.

Application requirements

  • You must demonstrate at least one previous (literary) project or work for which you received a fee. This work will be assessed for literary quality by independent external advisers.

  • The previous work may, for example, be a book, a journal publication, a live performance, a podcast or a digital production, provided it was realised within a professional context. In the case of a book, it must have been published under a standard publishing contract with an established literary publisher. In the case of a live performance, podcast or digital production, it must have been realised within a professional context, for example with an organisation that has received funding from the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

  • You must collaborate with a presentation partner who presents your new work to an audience, promotes it publicly and pays you a professional fee.

  • If your project involves a live performance, you are, in principle, expected to perform your own text. If this is not the case, please refer to the Theatre text grant scheme.

  • An income ceiling applies: taxable income may not exceed €52,500 in 2026 (in 2025 this was € 47,500), including any grant awarded.
