Wouter van Reek

Wouter van Reek (b. 1960) studied audiovisual design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. From 1990 to 2006 he made several animated TV series with freehand computer animation. As you can see in the Coppernickel (Keepvogel in Dutch, one of his best known characters) series, he writes the text, animates and does the voice-over himself. Since 1994 he creates one short animation film each year for the Dutch version of “Sesame Street”. From 2005 Coppernickel has also become a series for picture books. They have now been translated into six languages. Keepvogel en Kijkvogel in het spoor van Mondriaan (Coppernickel Goes Mondrian) won the Golden Apple at the 2011 Biennial of Illustration Bratislava, Slovakia.

Keepvogel, Wouter van Reek’s long-legged bird in the baggy hooded top, has a new friend. Kijkvogel is loosely inspired by Mondrian; his jacket and glasses look just like the ones the artist is wearing in the photo on the back of the book. His dog Foxtrot is also part of the Van Reek universe and appears to be a close relation of Tungsten, Keepvogel’s faithful companion.
