Writer in Residence Programme 2007

Etienne van Heerden as WIR in Amsterdam

1-31 August 2007

During the quiet summer month of August, writer Etienne van Heerden had the time to concentrate on his research for a new novel. His book In plaats van liefde, translated by Robert Dorsman, was published by De Bezige Bij in 2006.

Etienne van Heerden (1954) grew up in the Eastern Cape Karoo where his African speaking father was a merino farmer in the Graaff-Reinet and Cradock districts. His English mother was a mathematics teacher. He is the author of novels, short story collections, books of poetry, essays, cabaret collections and a theoretical book on postmodernism. He also is the founder and editor of the multicultural South-African internet journal LitNet and currently teaches at the University of Cape Town as Hofmeyr Professor of Afrikaans and Netherlandic Studies.
