Writer in Residence Programme 2006

Frank Martinus Arion as WIR in Amsterdam

1 Oct-1 December 2006

Frank Martinus Arion (b. 1936) lives on Curaçao and came to the Netherlands as a part of the University of Amsterdam’s cooperative exchange program. From October until December 2006 he stayed in the apartment provided by that university.

In autumn 2006 Frank Martinus Arion was the focal point of the Dutch publishing industry’s “Holland reads!” campaign. His novel Dubbelspel (Double Play), published by De Bezige Bij, was the work highlighted during that campaign, and Arion has travelled throughout the Netherlands to meet his readers and talk about his work. Before and after the campaign, Arion carried out his own research and delivered a series of public lectures for literature students at the University of Amsterdam. These lectures were directly connected with the establishment of the new chair for West-Indies Literature at that university.

On Thuesday November 21 Frank Martinus Arion participated in the “World Speakers” series, organised by literature festival Winternachten and the Istitute of Social Studies. The series of panel discussions brings together prominent minds in the field of science and literature. Being the chairman of a school on Curaçao, Frank Martinus Arion was invited to speak about education and about the future of the multicultural Netherlands.
