Writer in residence april 2022
6-29 April 2022
The Australian-Dutch / British writer Michel Faber will be in the Netherlands as writer in residence until April 29. At the invitation of the Dutch Foundation for Literature, he lives and works in Amsterdam for a month. During his stay he is working on a book about modern music and he will perform in Deventer during the Dutch book week.
As writer in residence, Faber wants to complete an extensive non-fiction book about music, in which the Netherlands also plays a modest role, for example in the parts about European pop music that is unknown in the English-speaking world and about the experience of English dominance in modern music in the Netherlands and other non-English speaking countries.
Biography
Michel Faber was born in The Hague in 1960, but emigrated to Australia at a young age where he studied Dutch, English, rhetoric and philosophy at the University of Melbourne. In the early 1990s he moved to Scotland. In addition to novels, he published collections of short stories and novellas. Since his first novel, Under the Skin, published in 2000, his work has been widely acclaimed and awarded. The Dutch translations of his prose were provided by Harm Damsma and Niek Miedema for publishing house Podium.
Faber’s most famous work is the monumental The Crimson Petal and the White, about a prostitute in nineteenth-century London. The BBC turned it into a television series. His debut novel Under the Skin has also been made into a film, with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. In 2015, after the death of his wife, he announced that he would no longer write novels. In 2016 the collection of poems, Undying in memory of his wife Eva, were published. Nevertheless, D. A Tale of Two Worlds, an adventurous fantasy story and an ode to Charles Dickens, came out in 2020.
